The Lesbian Bar Project is an online branded campaign to bring greater awareness and prosperity to the remaining Lesbian Bars across the country. During the late 1980s, there were an estimated 200 Lesbian Bars across the country; by early 2020 there were just 16.
Now there are 15 in total, with one closing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the bars continue to disappear at a staggering rate, the campaign seeks to promote and protect these vital queer establishments through a PSA, website, and fundraising effort.
The Lesbian Bar Project Roundtable is a virtual event that aims to celebrate, support, and preserve the remaining Lesbian Bars that exist in the United States. In partnership with Rockland County Pride Center, Jägermeister’s #savethenight initiative, Lea DeLaria/The Katz Company let’s come together as we work to make sure our Lesbian Bars not only survive but thrive in a post-pandemic landscape.
DJ Mary Mac will kick off the night and lead us into a signature Jagermeister cocktail tutorial with Bartender Val (aka Boston) from Pearl Bar in Houston, TX. Next, will be a discussion about queer spaces moderated by Dayna Troisi of GoMag with the owners of A League of Her Own (Washington DC), Henrietta Hudson (New York, NY), Herz (Mobile, AL), Gossip Grill (San Diego, CA), Pearl Bar (Houston, TX), My Sister’s Room (Atlanta, GA), and Walker’s Pint (Milwaukee, WI).
We’ll end the night by raising a glass with Lesbian Icons, Lea DeLaria, Rosie O’Donnell and Roxane Gay as they share their personal connections to these important queer spaces. All ticket sales will go directly to the Lesbian Bar Project Pool Fund. When the fundraising campaign ends on Nov. 25th, 2020, Lesbian Bar Project will disperse finances evenly between the 13 participating bars. Note that Sue Ellen’s of Dallas, TX and Pearl Bar of Houston, TX have chosen to donate their portions to allow their fellow bars to receive more support.
Without space, we lose power, validity, community, safety, and access to intergenerational dialogue. With your help, we can save our Lesbian Bars. For more information please visit: www.lesbianbarproject.com
