Help Us Honor History.

Bayard Rustin was a courageous and trailblazing social justice activist. A member of the Black and LGBTQ+ community, he was the lead organizer of the March on Washington and a close associate of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For over a decade, Rustin worked for the Fellowship of Reconciliation, which was headquartered on North Broadway in Upper Nyack, New York. Jackson Avenue was once the western edge of a vibrant middle-class Black community that was destroyed by urban renewal in the 1960s. The building where the Pride Center currently operates was once the headquarters of the Nyack Elks Lodge 424, an important Black social club. The Nyack NAACP and Pride Center, along with the Village of Nyack, are collaborating to dedicate a section of Jackson Avenue after this essential leader in both the African American and LGBTQ+ communities as a way to honor the intersectional legacies of this figure, these communities, and this building.
